Silhouettes from Popular Culture

Written by KD Shaw

Who hasn’t used a coffee table book to impress company? Knowing when to display that copy of National Geographic Photographs, Suicide Girls or a book chock a block full of those wacky Japanese inventions you never knew you needed is pure genius. Coffee table books are displayed to impress or make a statement about who you are and what you know and love.

A new addition to the coffee table book scene is a must have for pop culture lovers. Olly Moss’ Silhouettes from Popular Culture takes the pure form of 18th century silhouettes and adds those favorite characters we have grown to love through the years. In true coffee table form, Silhouettes is light on text (introduction and acknowledgements only) but heavy on “Oh I know that one.” Try sitting around with fellow geek friends and family to test your knowledge.  Showcasing pop culture icons like The Doctors, Tyler Durden and even the gang from Saved by the Bell. Can you guess them all? There are still 2 pages in there that have continued to stump me.

Silhouettes from Popular Culture  is a compilation of favorites from creator Olly Moss’ acclaimed ‘Paper Cuts’ series, exhibited at a sold-out Gallery 1988 show.  To see some of Olly’s other projects, such as his awesome “Video Game Classics” check him out his site. This book is the perfect gift for that pop culture lover in your life and at 6 3/4“ x 6 3/4“ it’s almost small enough to fit in a not so small stocking. Grab your copy from Titan Books.
